Today February 2 is Candlemas Day, an event in which the candles are blessed. According to old traditions, these candles were lit and kept in the home on several occasions, violent storms, while waiting for people who were slow to return, assisting a dying person but also to find people drowned. It was believed, in fact, that you let go in the water would stop where the body had been drowning. There are many sayings and proverbs, some with opposite meanings, flourished around this event, just to name a few:
"When Candlemas winter semo
de fora;
but if it rains or the wind blows from the
'Semo in winter. "
completely opposite direction is the second proverb
"For the Holy Candlemas
if
winter storm or hail if we are out of it;
but if it's sun or pale sun
we are only mid-winter"
This days later than the winter solstice you gain an extra hour of light like reminds us of another saying:
Candlemas day lengthens to an hour.
Apparently then this day to the animal world is full of events. A belief that wants to Candlemas the bear comes out of his hole, and once light, because of the sun, its shadow will be back in his shelter because of yarn will know for sure that the winter is not over yet.
Something very much like we find in the American tradition; Bernacca news but in this case, the groundhog that following the procedure mentioned above bear the sight of his shadow back in his lair, away from the next six settimane di freddo.
- The winter will not go before San Vito.
said the old woman with hot - Winter
will stay as long as the fig leaf of a palm will be.
He turned the donkey and said: - Do not heat
until the stubble did not check the thistle.
the witch said: - It is safe to do so
that winter comes when it comes
and lasts as long as it lasts.
