Country: USA

Plot:
Three university students, Mara, Michelle, and Lillian, come to Prejnar, a small town in Romania, to work on their thesis on the culture of Transylvania and superstitions. Near their residence is located the castle of King Vladislas. Ancient legends line the walls of the royal palace, legends of vampires and a mystical relic known as the "Blood Stone", able to lull the desire for blood of the undead, returning to a supplementary humanity. After being banished by his father Prince Radu returns to the castle, claiming his rights on the bloodstone and bringing terror to the small town. Stefan will be to face it, who rushed to the aid of three girls and a brother less than the prince, born from the union of Vladislas and a mortal woman.

Comment:
The vampire genre is certainly one of the most prolific in the horror genre, though quite diverse in its exposures occurred in decades. From the gothic atmosphere and attention to the smallest details of the Hammer productions, the serialization of recent years that have made the commercial success of brands like True Blood and Buffy The Vampire Slayer, vampires had to submit, from time to time, to a partial and sometimes Full modification of its habitat that has passed from the old Transylvanian castles of the early, up to ridicolissimi to American colleges, or the luxurious villas of the bloodsuckers and decent gays in the saga by Stephenie Meyer, so that jolts the heart of bimbominkia of today, which certainly lacks the good (or bad) taste in film, bolstered by money a product really disgusting.

Subspecies - Vampires is a direct child of the 90s, and what you can tell by the look not only taken by the actors from the hair tufts, or primordial stop motion special effects used in some circumstances for the creation of small demons born from the hand Radu, but it reflects from the absolute authenticity of a product unpretentious, born with only an excuse to entertain. A film to drive in, or Saturday evening, to enjoy in peace with the lights out and without the fear of being disappointed, because we start with minimum demands. What was lost to this day among the millions of dollars wasted by the box office blockbuster in full but empty by consensus, sometimes forced in directions favorable media coverage in the press for fear of causing a financial crash in the great and perfect machine that is the entertainment world. Subspecies is the antithesis of the elaborate and involved sborone, beautiful in its honesty and unabashedly glamorous despite the inexorable passage of time. The Full Moon Entertainment

veteran Charles Band, formerly the parent of prosperous series of Puppet Master, focuses his attention on the universe, creating a vampire saga that begins with this very Vampires. The reins of the wagon is Ted Nicolaou, the assets already in the field of terror from previous The DungeonMaster and Terrorvision. Although when they have a tight budget are able to land with the whole crew in Bucharest where they will be carried out within two months, filming of this little cult.
The realization is certainly more than good, and in some cases points to the far Murnau's Nosferatu, thanks to the light and shadow play in which the vampires appear and dissolve. Radu is a good character, is the embodiment of evil, but defiant flickering to the appearance of the sun, with an eternal drool blood on their lips.
The setting gives no small Transylvanian air quality to his work focusing on mythology and folklore of this mysterious land. Much space is given is for the outdoors, where they will not be taken up only to forests and castles but also some traditional festivals and religious ceremonies of their country of Count Vlad.

Despite being a film rather simple construction of the background is quite comprehensive and detailed, based on historical roots, and unarmed villagers mythological alliances with the people of the Turkish invasion of vampires. The vampires were in fact defeated the Ottoman threat in exchange for people from the agonist Bloodstone, the stone that the blood of the holy pin.
And on the basis of this incipit that will be constructed later followed (three in total) which, in some cases, they can not get the same results honest work before.
Highly recommended for an hour and a half back in time.

Subspecies in Italy does not have enjoyed a reversal in the DVD, but you can order from the states a box set containing all 4 episodes.

Via Dura aka The Way Of The Drug

Year: 1989
Genre: Action
Country: Italy
Original title: The Way Dura
Director: Michele Massimo Tarantini
Cast: Miles O 'Keeffe, Milton Rodriguez, Chuck Bishop, Philip Wagner, Sarah Sharman Henry Silva
Availability: VHS

Plot:
U.S. intelligence in Bolivia sends three of his best agents to destroy drug trafficking Captain Wesson. Arrived on site will find that their contact is dead, and the meeting place has turned into a ruthless ambush. So start a manhunt by army personnel of the drug lord in respect of the special team.

Comment:
ruthless guerrilla movie not to be confused with "La Via Della Droga" by Enzo G. Castellari.

È assimilabile al classico eroe anni ottanta da poche battute che preferisce their way to the sound of bullets rather than words. In fact the film for its entire duration, is nothing more than a single and continuous shooting nearly free of dialogue. There is a moment of pause and it would be quite fun to count all the dead killed that progressively wiped dall'imperturbabile trio of action. Sure you get to triple digit abundant. To get an idea of \u200b\u200bwhat it has to offer "The Hard Way" just imagine the last quarter of an hour with Commando Schwarzennegger lasted for an hour and a half. How would a person of my acquaintance: "TOOOOOOSTO."

The scenes are well directed, supported by innumerable explosions that ignore the laws of physics and a decent job of stuntman (very beautiful sequence in which the Bull broke into the church with the bike). But such a product, moreover, must be taken with the appropriate measures by going to frame how a small action film that does not take itself very seriously. It is precisely for this reason that can make the joy of lovers of the action more vulgar and ignorant, but at the same time, the viewer bored to death looking for the most pretentious at all costs a consistent narrative. The Hard Way

remained confined only to the distribution on VHS, now hard to find but not impossible to find a rarity.

Memorable Scene: Henry Silva: "Let me tell you something: I love to kill people. Gratifies me. "

Consigliori

Year: 1973
Genre: Gangster / Noir
Country: Italy / Spain
Original Title: The Consigliori
Director: Alberto De Martino
Cast: Tomas Milian , Martin Balsam, Francisco Rabal, Dagmar Lassander
Availability: DVD

Trama:

The etymology of the word "Consigliori" to be found in the vast vocabulary of Sicily, which tends to be appropriated in this title, revived by Coppola masterpiece, "the man trusted by the head of the family of a criminal syndicate." Alberto De Martino, during his wanderings after the horror noir-spy-spaghetti western, largely influenced by the commercial success of the movie based on Mario Puzo's novel creates a plot that follows almost word for word in his footsteps, albeit leaving behind the verve original drama and focused his work on the dictates of style and definitely resulting from poliziottesco made in Italy in those years sulla cresta dell’onda.

Ed è proprio a causa di questo forte link to the decision to leave everything to the boss Consigliori not bat an eyelid and let him go with his blessing. This goodwill will be used to Garofalo, a member of the family as a scapegoat for the start of a bloody attack on the division and the consequent power.

The first part of the movie is filmed in San Francisco. A treat photography is Massaccesi Aristide (aka Joe D'Amato), who followed along with a very small team De Martino overseas to shoot the exteriors. Not miss the chase between the many uphill-downhill, certainly a characteristic element of the U.S. city. The action will then move to Italy, more precisely in Palermo and Sicily in the town of Polizzi Generosa, where the householder and his indomitable will find protection and help from old friends. The setting
rocky and desolate village of means with determination a reality actually exists, as was the scene of one of the first massacres of the mafia.
With this scene change the rhythm is affected, the times became less frantic, leaving room for a plot that basically melancholy will be created between the host and the people on the ground, preserving all the action to a dramatic epilogue. Final which will have as background a procession of folk Catholic-Orthodox, where a crowd of believers, dressed in black carrying on their shoulders Lady in the streets, which will also be the setting for the final clash between the two factions.

Tomas Milian and Martin Balsam are quite convincing, and their pairing has a certain feeling derivative of their bond. Surely they are the strength of a film that, on balance, does not provide anything new to the genre and that, even in his modesty is quite enjoyable, is to be recommended only to fans of the genre.

The film is available on DVD from Legocart, dispassionately but I do not recommend you buy this because the master is there really something indecent. Better to wait a television or a subsequent step remastering.

Memorable Scene: boss on the run find refuge in a brothel where a prostitute is offered. The boss waiver to the unusual invitation is up with this phrase "know what they say in my part? The fuck does not want these things".

Darkness

Year: 2002
Genre: Horror
Country: USA / Spain
Original Title: The Dark
Director: Jaume Balaguer
Cast: Anna Paquin, Lena Olin, Iain Glen, Giancarlo Giannini, Fele Martinez
Availability: DVD

Plot:
A family moves into a strange isolated house, but something seems wrong, come to life as soon as it gets dark. The two children begin to feel the presence of disturbing elements, while the father gives progressive signs of imbalance. The house hides a terrible past: it was the scene of a massacre of children. Now, after exactly forty years, coinciding with an eclipse of the sun, the evil is to complete what was left off.

Comment:
A few years after its debut, Balaguer puts his name in the cursed genre of the houses.

Having achieved the status of young hopefuls from the Catalan with Nameless gives a more psychological horror to devote himself. Supported in the field distribution by Bryan Yuzna and his Fantastic Four, Darkness can enjoy an economic effort that is reflected in the choice of a cast and an important effector care, aimed at sewing the best weaving esoteric plot.

very personal style of English, which favors the building of tension through the gradual growth and structural relationships emotions between the characters and the narrative context, rather than resorting to mere effettaccio aesthetic end in itself. In this perspective it is perfectly placed the house in which to live are the protagonists of the film, isolated from the rest of the world and mother of dirty leaden atmosphere, able to terrorize the host as soon as the sun was to fall and darkness dominates.
In fact it is the house the real protagonist, the central pivot around which the stories of the characters almost fallen to mere functional objects to the mire of evil. The story is of the damned will stay hidden until the final, while for the duration of the film will make tentative appearances by the use of flashback or narrative elements (the discovery of the secret room, the picture of the "sisters") that will blow the demonic influences, bringing insanity to the father-husband.

Despite considerable aesthetic in the film industry continues a sense of boredom, destroyed only for sporadic moments in the important moments that succeed in every way to maintain a minimum level of curiosity, only to regain the trust of the viewer into an incredible ending. Is still appealing the occult and ritualistic nature of the script, the solar eclipse that takes the earth to be turned into darkness with the eternal sacrifice of seven children.

Palesi influences rushed to the realization of a film, guilty and aware to return - albeit with a personality - in a vein quite prolific in the recent past, cleverly builds and pays homage to the classic performers such as the type Amytiville Horror (again, the days are scanned one by one) and Shining (Iain Glen's character has a lot of Jack Torrance Nicholson). Shining it also picks up the child relationship - ghost, almost similar to that seen in Kubrick's film Darkness little Paul is haunted by dark presences that haunt the house, depicting children of his age.

As mentioned earlier the better collection of players takes place efficiently with the homework, carving out some points in absolute personality. I am referring to the character of Giancarlo Giannini, real element of surprise in the development of the storyline, sinister and gloomy enough air to be with his Italian doc. A real change artist. Lena Olin and Anna Paquin (True Blood of the bitch) would work best in their roles as mother and daughter bound by a difficult relationship, emphasized throughout, and which finds its maximum exposure in the transcendent final. To support Fele Martinez, who is also plays a role quite similar to that seen in Tesis . In fact, Regina will help you to discover the mysteries hidden behind the mysterious house.

Summing Darkness is not the best Balaguer's work, but it is definitely a movie atmosphere that should be seen in its fullness because, although in its slowness, the entire course is nothing but the brain and the construction of a manic tour de force in its final 20 minutes will accommodate the audience came from there a bit 'bored.

Cronos

Year: 1993
Genre: Horror
Country: Mexico
Original Title: Cronos
Director: Guillermo Del Toro
Cast: Federico Luppi, Ron Perlman, Claudio Brook, Margarita Isabel, Tamara Shanath
Availability: VHS

Plot: A
antiquarian finds a box inside a device that can give eternal life, on one condition: to become a vampire

Comment:
Cronos is a dark tale, a dream where the dismal surreal finds its essence in the macabre and vulgar, but almost never in fetish friendly and gentle. History has esoteric roots, moved to the present, creating a mystique that will lead to weave two lives to the extreme. The wealthy industrialist and antiques dealer Jesus De La Porta have, for various reasons, desire to own an old instrument in which a trapped insect is capable of giving eternal life. But the search for what is presumed to be the happiness is not always satisfied, immortality has its price.

in his first big-screen director Guillermo del Toro accurately highlighting its distinctive features that characterize then his entire filmography. A fairytale start (then resumed in a much more pompous in Pan's Labyrinth), the fetish for insects, vision and sheer cunning of children and finally the use of one of its players-Ron Perlman as a symbol. Film from the immense potential, perhaps a little 'faded from the warm hand of an inexperienced but Del Toro already pretentious, however, able to film a surprising punch in the stomach that will not trouble you any harm.

Cronos, despite the limited budget (2 million dollars), is one of the most expensive Mexican film ever. Its pre-production was dissestante and difficult, no one was able to finance the film so much that the director had to borrow half a million dollars to bring complete the project. The actors, however, turned it all without expecting pay, why Del Toro and Perlman became inseparable friends since then.
